What's Your Power Quality Problem?

With the ever-increasing use of sophisticated controls and equipment in industrial, commercial, institutional, and governmental facilities, the continuity, reliability, and quality of electrical service has become extremely crucial to many power users. Electrical systems are subject to a wide variety of power quality problems which can interrupt production processes, affect sensitive equipment, and cause downtime, scrap, and capacity losses. Momentary voltage fluctuations can disastrously impact production . . . extended outages have a greater impact.

The most common power quality problems are:

Voltage Sags

Voltage sags are the most common power problem encountered. Sags are a short-term reduction in voltage, and can cause interruptions to sensitive equipment such as adjustable-speed drives, relays, and robots. Sags are most often caused by fuse or breaker operation, motor starting, or capacitor switching. Voltage sags typically are non-repetitive, or repeat only a few times due to recloser operation. Sags can occur on multiple phases or on a single phase and can be accompanied by voltage swells on other phases.

Power Interruptions

Power interruptions are zero-voltage events that can be caused by weather, equipment malfunction, recloser operations, or transmission outages. Interruptions can occur on one or more phases and are typically short duration events, the vast majority of power interruptions are less than 30 seconds..

Voltage Flicker

Voltage flicker is rapidly occurring voltage sags caused by sudden and large increases in load current. Voltage flicker is most commonly caused by rapidly varying loads that require a large amount of reactive power such as welders, rock-crushers, sawmills, wood chippers, metal shredders, and amusement rides. It can cause visible flicker in lights and cause other processes to shut down or malfunction.

S&C PureWave® Products

S&C offers PureWave® power quality systems, the broadest selection of products offering whole-facility protection from virtually any power quality problem from 380 volts through 34.5 kV. These large-scale systems can be tailored to your specific power quality problem to offer the most economical and cost-effective solution. These products are designed to protect an entire facility from the impact of power quality problems. No longer is the data center the only area receiving protected power—the factory floor, offices, and support areas can all be economically protected. Power quality problems can shut down whole factories and processes, causing significant product loss, maintenance and repair expense. For plants running 24/7 or near capacity, it is often impossible to recover from this lost production.

S&C has manufactured power quality products and systems for industrial and utility applications for over 20 years. S&C’s Power Quality Products Division's PureWave® line has realized significant success providing power quality solutions to the continuous process and service industries. As one of the few companies developing large-scale, outdoor and indoor power quality systems to protect entire facilities, S&C PureWave products ensure a consistent and reliable high-quality power supply at industrial and commercial installations worldwide.

Overview

Application of the PureWave® Source-Transfer System requires that the facility be served by two independent power sources.

Using a sophisticated control system, the power-electronic switches in the Source-Transfer System provide sub-cycle switching between the two power sources before a problem on one source—a voltage sag, surge, or complete outage—can affect critical loads. This switching takes place typically within two to four milliseconds. The impact of voltage sags, voltage surges, and voltage interruptions can be eliminated.

The STS system is a cost-effective solution at facilities where the continuity, reliability, and quality of electrical service is extremely crucial. This system, available in ratings through 38 kV, features S&C PureWave Power-Electronic Switches combined with time-proven S&C Metal-Enclosed Switchgear that provides complete protection and isolation functions.

Overview

The PureWave UPS System is an immediate-response, high capacity, quick discharge uninterruptible power supply system that provides power protection to entire facilities served by a single source, and protects power sensitive equipment from the detrimental effects of power disturbances such as voltage sags, surges, transients, momentary disruptions, and complete outages. The system is designed to support full loads for a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 60 seconds for partial load conditions. The UPS can be coordinated with a generator set for outages in excess of 30 seconds.

The medium-voltage PureWave UPS System can deliver a maximum of 2.5 MVA (per container) of clean power and can switch critical loads from the utility service to the system’s standby battery energy source in 2–4 milliseconds. As many as eight 2.5 MVA containers can be paralleled to protect larger loads up to 20 MVA.

The low-voltage Purewave UPS System is modular in nature and is scaleable from 313 kVA up to 2500 kVA for 208—600 volt applications.

Some featured applications include:

  • Data and Call Centers
  • Electronics Manufacturers
  • Pharmaceutical Production
  • Process Industries
  • Manufacturing Facilities

Purewave UPS Systems are available in the following models:

  • Low-voltage (380 to 600 volts), supporting loads of 313 to 1250 kVA,
  • Low-voltage (380 to 600 volts), supporting loads of 1250 to 2500 kVA, and
  • Medium-voltage (4.16 to 34.5 kV), supporting loads of 2.5 to 20 MVA.

S&C's PureWave DSTATCOM Distribution Static Compensator Protects the Distribution System From Problem Loads

The PureWave DSTATCOM protects the distribution system from voltage flicker caused by the rapidly varying reactive current draw of non-linear dynamic loads. It thus enables such problem loads to co-exist on the same feeder as more sensitive loads. The PureWave DSTATCOM instantaneously exchanges real and reactive power with the distribution system without the use of bulky capacitors or reactors.

For complete protection, the PureWave DSTATCOM, coupled with a solid-state breaker and energy storage, provides full voltage support for critical loads on the distribution circuit.

Overview

The PureWave Adaptive VAR Compensator provides real-time voltage support for voltage sags and dips caused by rapidly-changing dynamic loads, as well as flicker mitigation and power-factor correction. By reducing voltage fluctuations and managing reactive power flow, system stability and reliability are enhanced and system capacity is increased.

The PureWave AVC can enable problem loads to coexist on the same feeder with more sensitive loads, obviating the need for separate feeders. The PureWave AVC is ideal for heavy commercial and industrial processes having varying mechanical cycles, corresponding to rapidly varying reactive power demand. Typical applications include:

  • Mining — rock crushing machinery, shovels
  • Automobile manufacturing — stamping, welding, and shredding operation
  • Pulp and paper — sawmills, wood chippers
  • Steel manufacturing — arc furnaces, cranes, rolling operations
  • Elevators and conveyors
  • Recreational — linear-induction-motor-driven amusement rides, ski lifts.

The PureWave AVC Adaptive VAR Compensator is an economical, distribution-class VAR compensator that addresses the reactive-power management requirements of a variety of dynamic loads. This microprocessor-controlled device utilizes power-electronic switches to instantaneously insert the appropriate number of multi-stage power capacitors, providing 300 kVAR or more of reactive compensation on a cycle-by-cycle basis.
